Biography

Sevvandi Kandanaaarachchi is a Senior Research Scientist at the Statistical Machine Learning Group in CSIRO. She is an Associate Investigator of the OPTIMA ARC Centre and a Partner Investigator of the MOBIUS ARC Research Hub. She completed her PhD in differential geometry and partial differential equations at Monash University in 2011. Following the completion of a Graduate Certificate in Data Mining and Applications at Stanford University in 2015, she transitioned into research in statistical machine learning. Her current research spans graphons, a mathematical tool for modelling large graphs, and Item Response Theory, a suite of models with Social Science roots, that she has adapted to evaluate machine learning models. Her work also extends to applying machine learning to accelerate scientific discovery.
