Biography
Dr Hugo Leroux is a Research Scientist within the Australian e-Health Research Centre (AEHRC), a part of CSIRO’s Health & Biosecurity Business Unit.
Hugo has expertise in data integration and semantic interoperability of clinical, research and pathology data. His work has applied semantic technologies to integrate ontological information with clinical data in order to expedite querying, reasoning and visualisation techniques exposing the meaning and utility of the clinical data that is applied to biomarker and drug discovery in medicine.
Within the antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and infectious diseases domains, Hugo has implemented a data integration pipeline to automate the inherently manual laboratory data reporting process into a dynamic repository based on the Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR) paradigm that expedites the semantic interoperability and reuse of the laboratory data to facilitate their analysis and reporting.
Hugo has developed the first CDISC ODM to HL7 FHIR mapping and model in 2016 and has been an invited contributor to the HL7 biomedical research and regulations (BR&R) working group meetings (WGM) and appointed co-chair for the February 2020 WGM in Sydney, Australia. In 2018, he was appointed to lead a Nationally connected Health and Clinical Research Network in collaboration with the Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC) and comprising the NHMRC, Digital Health CRC, Office of the National Data Commissioner and key universities.
Prior to his research role, Hugo was a Software Engineer/Analyst with five years’ experience in a commercial environment, working in model-driven development, service-oriented architecture and information retrieval fields. He holds a PhD from Monash University where he investigated the effectiveness of Software Visualisation to expedite comprehension. He is a Fellow of Australasian Institute of Digital Health (AIDH) and has been elected to the state branch of the AIDH (formerly Health Informatics Society of Australia) since 2014 and appointed co-vice-chair from 2016-2018.
