Biography

I am a coastal ocean modeller with CMAR. My background is in physics / ocean acoustics (Moscow In-t of Physics and Technology, 1989). I hold a PhD in Geophysics / Physics of the Sea (In-t of Mathematical Machine and Systems, Kiev 1999) and a Diploma in Computing from the University of Tasmania (2014). During my PhD study I built a 3D fine-resolution numerical model simulating hydrodynamics, sediment transport and contaminant cycling in inland water bodies and shelf seas (Margvelashvili et al., 1997). This model has been refined further through a number of projects, including RODOS - a multinational initiative aiming to develop an European Real-time Online Decision Support System for off-site nuclear emergency management. In 2001 I joined CSIRO Marine and Atmospheric Research. As a member of the coastal modelling team I am responsible for the sediment-transport modelling capabilities of the CSIRO Environmental Modelling Suite (EMS). The sediment transport model (MECOSED) which I built into EMS (Margvelashvili, 2008) has been tested in various applications around the Australian coast, including local-scale estuarine studies and continental shelf-scale applications (see list of publications).

Other Interests

My recent research priorities have been focused on the uncertainty of complex modelling systems and data-model fusion techniques. I am particularly interested in the use of Bayesian techniques for data assimilation and emulation of complex space-time resolving models.
