Biography

Mark leads the Value-added Critical Minerals Program in CSIRO's Mineral Resources Research Unit. The program focuses on developing Australia's capability to add value to minerals mined here by processing them into chemicals, metals and materials for modern manufacturing. Value-added Critical Minerals is home to CSIRO's hydrometallurgy capability and characterisation expertise and draws on a broader skill-base in pyrometallurgy, materials science and metal production.

Mark has a research background in geoscience, materials analysis and mineralogy, and through his leadership roles in Mineral Resources has developed a professional interest in the politics and policies of critical mineral supply chains. This has positioned him to lead the Value-added Critical Minerals Program for CSIRO integrating knowledge from orebody geoscience through mineral processing to materials production.

Mark joined CSIRO as a postdoc in 2012 and has led teams in exploration geology, orebody geoscience and mineral resources characterisation. Prior to joining CSIRO Mark worked as a structural geologist examining large-scale folding in the northern Zagros Mountains and the application of digital mapping technologies to structural geology. This work followed his PhD at the University of Liverpool where he worked on the deformation and metamorphism of rock at high temperatures in the Scottish Highlands.
