Biography

Dr Ashfaqur Rahman is the leader of the Statistical Machine Learning (StatML) group at CSIRO Technology. He leads a team of researchers dedicated to advancing foundational machine learning methodologies and translating them into impactful solutions for real-world challenges. The group’s research is centred on three core areas: Learning Causality and Representation in Complex Systems, Hybrid Modelling of Real-World Processes, and Reliable and Trustworthy AI/ML Systems. The group regularly publishes in top ranked AI/ML conferences including NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, AAAI, AISTATS, CVPR, and KDD. Under his leadership, the team has successfully delivered data-driven solutions across a diverse range of industries in Australia and internationally.

Dr Rahman received his PhD from Monash University, Australia, in 2008. He has authored over 200 peer-reviewed publications, including journal articles, conference papers, and book chapters. He actively collaborates with multiple Australian universities including Adelaide, Deakin, Monash, Griffith, and Swinburne university. Dr. Rahman is the co-lead of 'Causal AI for a changing world' theme of the Responsible AI Research (RAIR) Centre - a collaboration between CSIRO, and Adelaide University, and South Australian Government. He regularly contributes as a reviewer for leading journals and conferences. He serves as an Associate Editor for the Elsevier journal Information Processing in Agriculture and is actively involved in organizing major workshops and conferences. Dr Rahman is a Senior Member of the IEEE.
