Biography

Dr. Luana Lins, a Research Scientist in CSIRO’s as part of the Catalysing Australia’s Biosecurity Initiative, is leading cutting-edge research in biosecurity. Her current projects are focused on diagnostics of insects, particularly invasive ants in far north Queensland. Additionally, Luana's primary endeavor involves studying the genomics of thermal tolerance of fish in aquaculture, aiming to uncover the genetic mechanisms behind thermal resilience in salmonids to enhance the Australian industry.

Passionate about integrating new technologies such as environmental DNA, Luana seeks to simplify biosecurity measures while advancing scientific understanding. With a commitment to leveraging innovation, Luana is dedicated to addressing pressing challenges in biosecurity and contributing to the sustainable development of industries reliant on biological resources.

In her past role in the Environomics FSP, Luana developed a platform that simplifies the workflow for molecular species identification. This platform includes simplified web-lab steps and real-time analysis pipeline that allows species identification in as little as 20min after sequencing has started on a laptop. Luana is interested in ways to simplify eDNA workflows to reduce barriers to the use of eDNA applications for biosecurity applications.

Her other research interests include the use of molecular techniques to answer questions about the genomic basis of adaptation to polar environments, the time frame of colonisation of different environments and to investigating the factors that affect evolutionary rates. Luana received her PhD in Biological Sciences from The University of Sydney in 2015, where she focused on the molecular phylogeny of isopods. Her previous training in Brazil was on taxonomy and systematics of crustaceans.
