Biography
Maartje works in CSIRO's Agriculture and Food Footprints & Credentials group on the quantification of direct and indirect impacts of agriculture and other economic activities. She has a PhD in physics and has worked in academia as well as in the private sector. She leads projects focusing on improving environmental and natural capital accounting for Australian agriculture, developing the pilot version of the FarmPrint tool and working with a broad group of stakeholders to deliver the Common Approach for greenhouse-gas accounting in agricultural sectors. She works with agronomists on GHG and broader environmental accounting of broad-acre cropping.
As part of the Trusted Agrifood Exports mission, she evaluated the increasing role of sustainability metrics in trade and market access. She is interested in macro-effects of sustainability policy as well as voluntary action, with indirect or perverse effects often difficult to quantify.
Maartje was a member of the board of the Australian Life Cycle Assessment Society for 8 years until 2021 and is LCA Certified Professional.
