Biography
Wensheng Zhang has over 30 years of extensive research experience in hydrometallurgy. Before joining CSIRO, Wensheng held several research positions at Murdoch University, WMC Nickel, and Western Mining Technology (WMT), working on the development of new technologies and processes (including pilot plant operations), expanding his research capabilities in mineral processing industry.
Wensheng joined CSIRO in 2005, and since then, he has held Research Team Leader and Project Leader roles. His current focus is on hydrometallurgical processes for selective leaching, purification and recovery by solvent extraction, ion exchange, precipitation and crystallization for high purity, battery grade nickel sulphate, cobalt sulphate, manganese, aluminium and vanadium products, and separation and recovery of strategic metals including lithium, scandium and rare earths, niobium and tantalum, platinum group metals. Most recently, as part of the Hydrometallurgy Innovation team, he has focused on research that delivers critical innovations related to the development and testing of new flowsheets.

Project Leaders
Research and development of novel technologies and flowsheets for the production of various high purity, battery grade products, including • Nickel and cobalt sulphate (destined for the battery manufacturing industry) from low grade nickel laterite ores, spent batteries, • Manganese sulphate, electrolytic manganese metal (EMM) and dioxide (EMD) from low grade, manganese ores, • Vanadium pentoxide from various leach solutions containing iron and titanium, • Lithium from lithium ores and brine, • Alumina from various materials -
Principal Research Scientist
Leading research and development of novel technologies and processes in selective leaching and dissolution, purification and recovery by solvent extraction, ion exchange, redox conversion, selective precipitation and crystallisation for high purity, battery grade nickel, cobalt, manganese, aluminium and vanadium products, and for strategic metals including lithium, precious metals and platinum group metals, niobium and tantalum, scandium and rare earths.
