Biography

Lucy is a Research Scientist with CSIRO Agriculture & Food based in St Lucia, Queensland (formerly based in Toowoomba), with a major focus in crop-livestock systems research. Lucy’s most recent work has involved the use of whole-farm systems modelling approaches to evaluate the role of novel forages in mixed crop-livestock systems, including their role as reliable and productive feed sources under a changing climate.

Lucy joined CSIRO as a Postdoctoral Fellow in 2018, before being appointed as a Research Scientist in 2021. As an Animal Scientist, Lucy completed her PhD at Charles Sturt University, Wagga Wagga in pasture-livestock grazing systems and nutrition where she investigated the value of a second generation of annual pasture legumes in Australian mixed-farming systems.

Lucy grew up on a prime lamb and cropping property in central west NSW and has a strong connection to the agricultural industry. She enjoys engaging with industry and delivering science with impact. In a recent project “Improving the use of forage brassicas in mixed farming systems”, Lucy was responsible for the initiation and implementation of 22 on-farm demonstration sites that involved a close collaboration with a commercial industry partner. As a result, there has been growing interest and adoption of forage brassicas in drier mixed farming environments to fill feed gaps - an area not historically known to use forage brassicas.

Lucy currently works across several projects, including her recent appointment as Project Leader of a data delivery service project, Farming Forecaster. Farming Forecaster is a web-based decision tool providing livestock graziers with real-time information about predictive pasture availability and livestock production in 4-monthly projections, that is critical in supporting enterprise sustainability and land management.
