Biography

Peter Baker is a cloud architect and full-stack developer in the Environmental Informatics group at CSIRO, with a passion for cloud system architecture, data science, and full-stack web development. He graduated from the Australian National University in 2021 as a Tuckwell Scholar, earning a Bachelor of Science, majoring in Mathematics and Computer Science, with a GPA of 7.0.

Peter's professional journey began in 2018 when he became an academic tutor in Computer Science at the Australian National University. During his tenure, he honed his teaching and mentoring skills, including leading course material development and execution to adapt to the COVID-19 lockdowns, greatly enjoying helping students understand complex computer science concepts.

In 2021, he secured a Vacation Scholarship at CSIRO, where he worked on a data filtering pipeline for the 1622 Water Quality web platform, which remains in operational use, demonstrating his expertise in cloud computing and data science. The initial success of the work lead to further casual employment on this project, involving a considerable, fully documented expansion and redesign of the overall AWS data pipeline and deployment.

Currently, Peter is working on the Reef Restoration and Adaptation Program (RRAP) Information System at CSIRO. His role as a cloud architect and full-stack developer has seen him leverage his AWS cloud engineering skills to develop a large system in a maintainable, systematic way that supports modern cloud-native development and deployment patterns. He is also responsible for researching and implementing data models that facilitate collaboration, machine readability, and automated integration, with the aspiration of capturing and understanding data and workflow provenance. Peter's growing interest in graph databases has seen him explore their potential to integrate with standard ontologies such as PROV-O to support complex and efficient querying of linked data. His skill in full-stack web development has seen him apply modern development practices across the full stack, including cloud-native containerised Python services, IaC-defined serverless infrastructure (using CDK), OAuth authorisation services, and React Typescript frontend development.

Peter enjoys exploring and experimenting across a broad range of computer science interests including AI and high performance computing, and is always looking for opportunities to broaden his skill set.

In his personal life, Peter enjoys Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, weightlifting, bouldering, camping, and four-wheel driving.
