Biography

Dr. Gary Delaney is Research Program Director for CSIRO Technology’s Analytics & Decision Sciences program, which is one of Australia's largest applied AI research programs, comprising over 150 researchers, and helping shape Australia's national strategy in AI, data science, and digital technologies.

Gary's early scientific career was rooted in physics. He completed his PhD at Trinity College Dublin, studying the structure and dynamics of granular packings, and has since built an internationally recognised research programme at the direct intersection of computational physics and artificial intelligence. His work develops hybrid approaches that combine first-principles physical modelling with modern AI and machine learning techniques, applying them to problems in advanced manufacturing, materials design, and industrial process optimisation, with over 90 peer-reviewed publications.

A hallmark of Gary's career has been translating fundamental physics research into real-world industrial impact. His work in advanced manufacturing has produced digital twin frameworks and AI-accelerated simulation tools now in active use by industry partners. Gary's current research focuses on developing the next generation of AI-driven computational tools for physics — including neural network surrogates for granular flow dynamics, machine-learning-accelerated 3D simulation, and intelligent digital twins that enable real-time control of complex multi-physics manufacturing processes. This work sits at the frontier of scientific AI, bringing together deep physical understanding with modern foundation model approaches to unlock capabilities that neither discipline could achieve alone.
