Biography
Michael specialises in helping management and policy agencies prepare for transformational change. His current practice revolves around co-producing with partners an understand of the nature and implications of future ecosystem transformations, how societal factors shape decision options, the changes agencies and their stakeholders may need to make over time to sustain natural values, and the practical actions that can be taken in the near-term to enable those changes. He recently developed a methodology for assessing the vulnerability of Ramsar wetlands to climate change.
His career has traversed physical, ecological and social sciences. He has worked on understanding the nature of environmental value in the context of change, reframing strategic approaches to disaster, adapting protected areas systems, terrestrial and aquatic conservation, transitions in coastal systems, assessing the multiple ways water contributes to well-being, the sustainability of biofuels, and strategic assessments of resource use in Australian agriculture. His work typically involves synthesis of information from different disciplines, running stakeholder and expert workshops, analysis of biophysical, social and institutional data, and participating in government policy processes. He works with local state and national governments, regional natural resource management groups and non-government organisations across Australian and internationally.
