Biography

My research is driven by an intense love and respect for the ocean, its unique habitats and amazing wildlife. As a surfer, diver and naturalist, I have dedicated my career to studying the structure and functioning of coastal marine ecosystems (mangroves, seagrasses, saltmarsh and kelp forests). I have held research positions in Australia, France and Brazil, where I have employed a wide range of approaches (spatial ecology, stable isotopes and experimental biology) to improve the understanding of issues affecting the coastal environment. I am also passionate about protecting coastal resources from degradation caused by improper land-use, plastic debris, nutrient inputs and pollution.

My current work focuses on blue carbon research across the Indian Ocean and Asia Pacific regions, where I work with several CSIRO business Units (including - Environment, Land and Water, Agriculture and Food, and Business Development and Global) to raise awareness of the ecological and societal importance of coastal wetland ecosystems.

I am currently developing and leading innovative research that aligns with the strategic growth areas of Nature-based Solutions and Low Carbon Economies. Projects I am working on include - mapping coastal habitats and understanding their importance to fisheries and biodiversity (termed ecosystem co-benefits) as part of several blue carbon projects, helping to restore mangrove forests in countries like Sri Lanka, Kenya and Indonesia, and training young scientists and policy makers from our neighboring countries through capacity building initiatives such as DFAT's Australian Awards program.
