PERSONAL DETAILS
Education/qualifications: BSc(Hons) (Witwatersrand, 1977) PhD (Cambridge, 1981)
Brief career history: Principal Scientist at the Royal Greenwich Observatory, UK, 1982 – 1997, project scientist for major instrumentation projects at the international La Palma Observatory and subsequently, the Gemini Telescope Project (Hawaii and Chile). Editor, The Observatory magazine.

Principal Scientist at Schlumberger Research, Cambridge 1997 – 2004, with 8 patents in drilling technology.

Kelvin Medallist and Fellow of the Institute of Physics.

Associate Professor, Research School of Astrophysics, Australian National University, 2004 -2008; Editor, Astronomy Decadal Plan “New Horizons”, member of the Instrumentation Working Group for the Giant Magellan Telescope.

Senior Scientist, CSIRO and Monitoring & Verification Manager, CO2CRC, 2008 – present.

Presented with the CO2CRC's Tyndall Award for distinguished contributions to Australian CCS, 2019.

CURRENT RESEARCH ACTIVITIES/INTERESTS
• Lead scientist for the “Stage 3” CO2 storage experiment at the CO2CRC Otway site (estimated budget $50M).
• Development of monitoring methodologies for CO2 storage, especially environmental monitoring.
• Intersection of regulation, technology and social license for the monitoring problem for storage
• Lead author in the successful bid ($25M) to the Federal Education Infrastructure Fund for further development of the Otway Project.
• Led the monitoring activity at the CO2CRC Otway Stage 1 CO2 storage project to successful completion and sign-off by regulators. Lead author on the definitive paper integrating the monitoring data and drawing conclusions for CCS globally (Jenkins et al, PNAS 2012),
• Bayesian probability theory and application; my text book “Practical Statistics for Astronomers” is in its second edition with Cambridge University Press.
