Biography

Dr Yonggang Jin is a Principal Research Scientist and Research Team Leader with CSIRO Mineral Resources. He leads the Environment and Sustainability Research Team in the Sustainable Mining Technologies Research Program. The team's goal is to lower emissions, reduce environmental impacts and contribute to achieving sustainable mineral resources through innovative science and technology. The team’s diverse research activities include emissions abatement, water treatment, dust/particulates control and mine/mineral waste utilisation.

Yonggang completed his PhD in Chemical Engineering at University of Queensland in 2008. Prior to joining CSIRO in 2009, he spent about 1.5 years at the ARC Centre of Excellence for Functional Nanomaterials on his postdoctoral research. He has over 15 years research experience in developing functional nanomaterials for adsorption, separation and catalytic/photocatalytic applications in the energy and environmental areas. His current research mainly involves studying and developing novel materials and processes for greenhouse gas emissions reduction, SOx and NOx removal, diesel particulate matter control, mine/mineral dust management and tailings carbonation. His expertise includes the development of nanostructured carbon composite adsorbents for post-combustion CO2 capture and pollutants removal. He leads the development of emerging technologies for methane emissions abatement including solar photocatalysis and low-cost transition metal oxides catalysts. He also leads research in developing a novel photocatalysis technology to efficiently reduce carcinogenic particulate emissions in diesel exhaust. His current research in mine/mineral dust includes monitoring and analysis of respirable coal dust and respirable crystalline silica, evaluation of minerals dustiness, and new additives for mineral dust suppression. He is an author of over 50 peer-reviewed papers in high-impact journals, with more than 5,900 citations and an h-index of 27.
