Biography

Dr John McKibbin leads the CSIRO's energy networks research portfolio, which includes:
- the National Energy Analytics Research (NEAR) program to enhance energy policy and planning capability using a new generation of energy data and analytics, working with AEMO, the Commonwealth Government and several leading Australian research institutes
- the Global Power System Transformation (GPST) program to enhance the capability of power system operators to run 100% renewable power systems, working with the AEMO and several leading research institutes in Australia and internationally
- the Distributed Energy Integration Program (DEIP) to harness the collective power of rooftop solar, battery energy storage, electric vehicles and other customer owned energy resources, working with market bodies, network businesses, clean tech companies, universities and governments across Australia.

John has an extensive track record developing analytical capability to drive the energy transition, working across academia, industry and government, including:
- leading the development of a web-based building energy simulation, retrofit assessment and deployment platform for residential and commercial buildings, working with a consortium of building energy assessors, community organisations, electricity retailers, and local and state governments
- leading the development of a web-based microgrid assessment platform with ARENA and a consortium of project developers and community energy organisations
- leading the development of a web-based spatiotemporal data explorer for identifying energy demand management and renewable energy opportunities, working with ARENA and CSIRO Data61
- leading the development of a national platform for collecting, validating and integrating electricity network planning data, working with ARENA and electricity network businesses across Australia
- leading a cross-government energy data inventory and strategy on behalf of the Commonwealth Government working with relevant departments and agencies at a state and federal level

As a CSIRO flagship scholar, John's doctoral research developed an improved conceptual framework and analytical approach for designing resilient energy and water systems in a changing climate.
