Biography
Oliver completed his undergraduate and PhD at the Australian National University where investigated plant-microbe interactions using genomics, genetics and biochemistry. He then took a research fellowship position at The Australian National University investigating animal-microbe interactions. This project described the diversity and cellular location of microbiota in marine sponges and corals, as well as to developed a reliable method for genetically modifying the host animals. Continuing a theme of symbioses, Oliver then undertook a Post-Doctoral Fellowship at the CSIRO exploring the biochemistry and genetics involved in the symbiosis between fungi and algae in lichen. In his Research Scientist position at CSIRO Oliver now co-designs fungal strains and novel bioreactors for industry.
