Biography

Vu Nguyen has a passion for developing and bringing science and technologies to real world applications that may enhance safety, increase productivity and quality, reduce cost and improve quality of life. He has been a CSIRO researcher since 2003 after completion a PhD in Materials Science from Monash University. He has made significant contribution to the development and application of numerical methods to solve complex industrial problems related to metal processes that include casting, laser cladding, welding and additive manufacturing. In recent years, his focus has shifted to modelling, design and software development for additive manufacturing.

Vu is a key contributor in the development of the Oventus Medical sleep apneoa device and the associated software CSIRO-3DP for fast customised design of the device. Vu is the scientific lead in the development of C-THRU – a modelling based approach for distortion prediction and management in large scale additive manufacture. Prior to additive manufacturing he led the development and implementation of high performance ingot casting mould and filling systems that have been successfully adopted in aluminium cast houses in Australia, New Zealand and world-wide.

Vu currently leads the AIM Future Science Platform work package "Virtual Additive Manufacturing" and the project "Rapid prototyping and point of care 3D-print manufacture of patient specific ostomy seal device" co-funded by the IMCRC and Singular Health Group. He also leads the development of computational models to predict obstructive sleep apnoea for patient-specific treatment. He has been a key contributor to several research projects for Australian and international clients including Boeing, AML3D, Austal, Singular Health Group, OMX Solutions, Maxoniq, Oventus Medical, BAE, o.d.t Engineering, Rio Tinto Alcan/Pacific Aluminium, ROH, Nissan Casting, Ford, IMCRC, CAST CRC.

Vu has been invited speakers at Australian and international conferences in the fields of additive manufacturing and ingot casting. He has co-authored 48 refereed conference and journal papers, 16 technical reports and 8 patents.
