Biography

Dr. Harun Rashid is a Principal Research Scientist; he leads the Coupled Climate Modelling Team at CSIRO's Environment Research Unit. His team is responsible (in collaboration with ACCESS-NRI) for the development of Australia's national climate and earth system model, the Australian Community Climate and Earth System Simulator (ACCESS). They also perform targeted experiments with ACCESS to enhance the understanding and simulation of climate variability and change.

Dr. Rashid's research focuses on observational and modelling studies of climate variability and change, aiming to understand the associated processes and improve the performance of the ACCESS model. His current work investigates the effects of external forcings, such as anthropogenic greenhouse gases and aerosols, on global and regional climate variations. Previously, he extensively studied modes of climate variability, including the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO), using both climate models and observational data, a research area he continues to pursue.

Dr. Rashid served as the Lead Chief Investigator for two projects under the National Environmental Science Program's (NESP) Earth Systems and Climate Change (ESCC) Hub, focusing on the development and evaluation of ACCESS. He was a member of the Australian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society (AMOS) National Council from 2019 to 2023. He is a current member of the Scientific Steering Group for the World Climate Research Programme's (WCRP) core project, Earth System Modelling and Observations (ESMO).
