Biography
Dr Jonathan Richetti grows plants in the computer! That is, he develops and applies modelling and simulation for decision-making in Agriculture. Jonathan uses a range of approaches for modelling, from Artificial Intelligence to process-based modelling, combining data from multiple sources, such as orbital and proximal remote sensing, industry, climate, and market data, to generate solutions for the ag sector. For example, Jonathan led the development of the New Yield Gap Australia, and was a core developer on an AI-powered Nitrogen recommendation system for crops.
Jonathan's main areas of research are artificial intelligence with deep learning and machine learning applied to agriculture. Process-based modelling with APSIM. Earth observation for regional crop monitoring and precision agriculture for tactical decision-making. He collaborates nationally and internationally. For example, projects include drone and UAV weed monitoring with the University of Western Australia, crop modelling for precision agriculture with the University of Sydney, and perennial grain cropping modelling with Aarhus University in Denmark. Previous collaboration includes spatialisation of crop modelling for precision agriculture with INRAe in France and earth observation for phenology assessment of soybean in Brazil with INPE.
Beyond his academic achievements, Jonathan is an avid science communicator with a keynote at 2025's FutureAg Expo answering the question Is artificial intelligence helping grow farming? Jonathan often engages with the public during Science Week to share his passion for modelling and simulation.
Other Interests
Outside of work, Jonathan's passions (after his lovely wife, of course!) are judo and music.
