Mr Andrew Terhorst

Innovation Researcher

Contact details:

Andrew Terhorst started his career in 1987 working as a Marine Geologist for Anglo American Corporation in South Africa. He specialised in acoustic mapping of the seafloor surface using advanced side-scan sonar and sub-bottom profiling technologies in pursuit of offshore marine diamond deposits. Andrew left Anglo American Corporation to start his own remote sensing and spatial technologies business in 1991. This business, based in Cape Town, served a broad range of local and international customers in the fields of environmental assessment, forestry management, hydrology, mining and exploration, natural resource management, nuclear energy generation, and urban and regional planning. In 2004, Andrew joined the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) where he was employed as Earth Observation Manager at the Satellite Applications Centre. He established a new research group known as ICT4EO which focussed on Sensor Web Enablement. ICT4EO contributed to the early development the Global Earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS). Andrew joined the CSIRO in 2007 and helped establish world-class capability in sensor informatics in Hobart. He is currently researching open innovation networks with a specific focus on tacit knowledge sharing and absorptive capacity in inter-organisational research and development collaborations.
