Biography
Alejandro Vargas-Uscategui is a Materials Engineer (Colombia, 2008) and PhD in Materials Science (Chile, 2014). He has over twelve years of experience working with industry, academia, and research institutions. During the last five years, he has been intensively developing and progressing a robotic additive manufacturing technique based on cold spray technology that will be faster and more capable of producing, coating and repairing large components, particularly for aerospace and defence applications. He also has diverse expertise in materials science, corrosion and wear, materials characterisation, and electrochemistry.
He joined the Manufacturing Business Unit in the CSIRO for a three-year Postdoctoral Fellowship in February 2017. The fellowship was terminated early in January 2019 when he started as a Research Scientist. He is the co-inventor of a novel toolpath planning technology for robotic additive manufacturing and a champion for sensing systems for robotic additive manufacturing.
He has experience as a project leader working with research and engineering teams with members from diverse backgrounds. He also has experience formulating and managing R&D+i projects with public and private institutions' funding. He has excellent interpersonal skills and enjoys setting up and working with multidisciplinary and diverse teams. He is enthusiastic about tackling new challenges and highly expect to develop technology to improve or generate new business.
