Biography
Emma Westlake is a marine scientist who has been involved in research to advance knowledge and management of marine species both within Australian waters and abroad. She has a multidisciplinary background and subsequent skillset in tropical and temperate reef ecology, marine protected area management and operations, invasive marine pest research and mitigation, fisheries science, marine conservation, and shark and turtle ecology (population dynamics, behaviour and movement), and has extensive field experience including diving and boating operations. Her work has involved the development of monitoring and removal programs for invasive kelp species, the investigation of shark deterrent device efficacy, biological and ecological research and monitoring (reef health assessments, benthic, fish and invertebrate surveys, animal tagging), and the undertaking of research and stock assessments of major scalefish species in South Australia.
Her current focus is large pelagic predator (fish and shark) ecology, acoustics and telemetry, and Indigenous engagement. She also assists on many projects with scientific/commercial diving and boating operations.
