Biography
Garth has worked for CSIRO for over 30 years and runs a molecular biology facility located within Charles Sturt University. He uses a range of next-generation molecular technologies to address contemporary ecological issues within the freshwater space. He has also conducted desktop consulting to clients such as the Murray-Darling Basin Authority and supervised post-graduate students within the molecular component of their studies from several universities within Vic, NSW and ACT.
The most recent and current research projects occur across several different teams and include:
- how antimicrobial resistance genes (AMR) move from landscapes to humans.
- the fish gut microbiome and its relationship to health and survival of the host.
- elucidating the diet of fish from eDNA within the gut.
- the roles of microbes in rivers and wetlands,
- the detection of eDNA in water bodies and potential use as a biomonitoring tool.
