Biography

Dr. Sherry (Xiwei) Xu holds the position of Principal Research Scientist and serves as the Group Leader for the Software Systems Research Group. She is a conjoint senior lecturer with UNSW.

Sherry completed her Ph.D. at UNSW, School of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE), from 2007 to 2011, with a focus on software engineering and architecture. From 2012-2017, Sherry served as a Research Scientist at CSIRO Data61, where her primary focus was on designing and deploying cloud-based applications and ensuring the dependability of cloud applications. In July 2018, Sherry earned a promotion to Senior Research Scientist and assumed the role of Supervisor in the Architecture Analytics and Platform (AAP) research team. She concentrated on exploring the applications of software engineering and blockchain technology to enhance productivity, drive innovation and promote international competitiveness. Her achievements include high-quality research outputs, publications in top conferences and journals (e.g. ICSA, BPM, IEEE software etc.), and the publication of a book on architecting blockchain-based applications (published in March 2019) and the creation of Blockchain Patterns website in 2020, attracting significant attention from academia and industry.

In 2022, Sherry achieved another milestone, being promoted to Principal Research Scientist and assuming leadership of the Software Systems Research Group. She expanded her research into the realm of software engineering for AI, leading the exploration of architecting AI applications and data sharing platforms. Sherry collaborated with renowned scholars in the field to establish a new research area focusing on architecting and engineering AI software systems, contributing to the first practical book on operationalizing responsible AI (published in December 2023). She contributed to Responsible AI Pattern Catalogue.
