Biography
Dr Danyang Ying is a Principal Research Consultant / Scientist in CSIRO Melbourne, with a PhD in Materials Science and Process Engineering (2000) and BEng in Chemical Engineering and Chemical Machinery (1982). He was a Science Leader in Hortresearch (a Crown Research Institute of New Zealand) and a research engineer in the Research Institute of Chemical Machinery in China.
His current research interests include food extrusion; stabilisation, microencapsulation and delivery of bioactives (eg. polyunsaturated fatty acids, polyphenolics, probiotics) for functional food and nutraceutical applications; transformation of agricultural and horticultural by-products into nutritious and functional food ingredients; process development, modelling, integration and commercialisation.
He is the receiver of 2018 "National Awards for Excellence - Industry Impact Award" and 2018 "AusVeg Vic and Wolfdene Awards for Excellence - Industry Impact Award". He received 2020 “CSIRO Director’s Award – Entrepreneurship Award” for the team work on plant protein meat analogue technology development and commercial success.
Other Interests
• Extrusion – understanding the impact of extrusion on the physical, chemical and nutritional properties of food materials and apply the knowledge to the development of new ingredients and functional food products.
• Functional Ingredients and Bioactives – developing new ingredients and products for health and nutrition, including processing, stabilization of bioactives and value addition to edible biomass and by-products from food processing, and conversion into stable functional ingredients.
• Microencapsulation and delivery – developing new materials, processes and formulations to protect and target delivery of bioactives (polyphenols, probiotics, polyunsaturated fatty acids, etc.) during processing, storage and consumption.
• Formulation and Process Development – assist commercial clients in the development of new formulation and processes for functional foods and nutraceutical products.
• Powder Technology – understanding fluid bed particle spray coating by experimental and numerical simulation of the particle movement and the spray coating development.
