Biography

Dr David Ahmedt is a Research Scientist & the leader of the Efficient Computer Vision Team within the Imaging and Computer Vision Group, Data61, CSIRO, Australia. There, he manages several projects at CSIRO for commercial application of computer vision in the industry and healthcare environments. He is a high-achieving mechatronic engineer and holds an MSc in Automation and Manufacturing Systems, and a PhD in the field of computer vision. He has an outstanding academic trajectory including official recognitions of all theses (bachelor, master and doctoral), and several scholarships.

Dr Ahmedt has solid industrial experience including extensive international work in Colombia, Peru, Brasil, USA, Germany, and Australia. He worked for several years at manufacturing plants fulfilling a wide range of high-level positions in the areas of maintenance, production, and engineering project management. Before moving to Australia, in his latest role as LA Project Manager, he was responsible for planning, organising, directing, controlling, and coordinating engineering projects of over US10M and 25+ staff of researchers and engineers.

Motivated by AI and medical challenges, Dr Ahmedt finished his PhD studies in computer vision and its practical application in neurological disorders. The underpinning innovation of his thesis was the development of a motion recognition technology used to help neurologists in the study of patients’ behaviour during seizures, to provide clues on the sub-type of epilepsy the patient has and identify unusual seizure movements that require further investigation. The incorporation of such quantitative methods would assist in developing and formulating a diagnosis in situations where clinical expertise is unavailable. He has participated in collaborative research between industry and academia with well-known medical specialised organisations such as Mater Centre for Neurosciences and QIMR Berghofer in Australia, and with Karlsruhe Institute of Technology and Philips Research in Germany.

Recently, Dr Ahmedt has acted as the project leader for several critical and complex projects with Rheinmetall Defences Australia, Woolworths and Coviu, as well as internal projects such as monitoring skin lesions using 3D whole body mapping and vision AI for environmental surveys. He has a keen interest in pushing underlying scientific topics in the area of healthcare.
