Biography

Jason Dowling is a is a Senior Principal Research Scientist and Team Leader at CSIRO’s Australian e-Health Research Centre, where he leads a multidisciplinary group advancing machine learning driven medical imaging solutions for diagnosis, treatment planning, and monitoring. He has over 20 years’ experience in image analysis, software engineering, medical physics, and translation, with research spanning MRI, CT, PET, ultrasound, and wearable and portable imaging systems. His centre has an ISO13485 certified Quality Management System and Jason is experienced with Software as A Medical Device (SaMD) standards and processes (IEC62304, etc) and reporting requirements (including clinical validation and TGA CTN processes).

Jason holds a PhD in Human and Computer Vision Systems from Queensland University of Technology (2007), and degrees in Computer Science (Hons, 2002) and Comp/Psychology (1999) from Monash University. He is a member of the Australasian College of Physical Scientists and Engineers in Medicine and a co-inventor on an international patent for wearable ultrasound technology.

Jason’s work integrates AI with clinical translation, regulatory alignment, and national infrastructure development. He has led or contributed to more than 20 major research grants (>A$15M) in areas including oncology, cardiology, theranostics, and respiratory medicine. His software innovations include the sCTGen pipeline for synthetic CT generation (used in national radiotherapy trials) and the Zendaya platform for federated AI execution across clinical imaging networks. Jason has also led work on quality assurance tools for radiation therapy trials and is a pioneer in MRI-only treatment planning and real-time wearable ultrasound imaging.

He is an Adjunct Professor at the Queensland University of Technology (Faculty of Health, School of Clinical Sciences); has Adjunct Associate Professor positions with the Faculty of Medicine at the University of New South Wales and the School of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering at the University of Queensland ; an Honorary Principal Fellow position with the Centre for Medical Radiation Physics at Wollongong University; and other honorary positions at the Universities of Sydney (Institute of Medical Physics) and Newcastle (Mathematical and Physical Sciences).

Jason regularly collaborates with hospitals, research institutions, and industry, and plays a central role in shaping international standards for AI in 3D/4D scanning through his leadership in ISO/IEC JTC1 WG12, where he serves as editor, and co-author of multiple international standards.

Jason has received numerous awards, has been a member of winning teams in several MICCAI medical image challenges, and continues to contribute to national strategy, clinical translation, and the development of Australia’s medical imaging AI capability. His media appearances include radio, newspaper and ABC TV.
