Biography
Dr. Simon Harrison combines physics-based modelling with markerless motion capture to posture and movement related research problems. With his colleague Raymond Cohen they have developed "Ergomechanic", a system that non-invasively measures body movement without anything put on the body. The system has been used for ergonomics, health and sports applications.
A highlight of this work was a demonstration webinar for National Science week in 2023, called Dance with a Digital Human, in which he broke the record for online attendance (over 21,000 students) and won a CSIRO Award with the Communications team as a result.
Simon completed his PhD in Biomechanical Engineering from UWA in 2007 and subsequently held a post doc position focused on equine biomechanics with Marcus Pandy at The University of Melbourne. Simon has worked as a research scientist in CSIRO Data61’s Computational Modelling and Natural Systems modelling groups, researching problems in the areas of human performance, injury, food digestion, and health. Since 2017 Simon has led the Digital Human Initiative, a team with a focus on improving human performance and health using computational simulation and analysis.
