Biography
Prof Koribalski obtained her PhD at the University of Bonn in Germany.
She was awarded the Max-Planck Society's Otto-Hahn Medal for her research done in collaboration with colleagues at the neighboring Max-Plank-Institut für Radioastronomie (MPIfR).
In July 1993 she joined CSIRO's Australia Telescope National Facility (ATNF) as a postdoctoral fellow before being awarded a permanent position in 1996.
Prof Koribalski conducts a many astronomy projects, all with international collaborators, and has mentored numerous postdoctoral fellows and PhD students from a wide range of Australian and international universities as well as Yr10 work experience students.
Among her key HI projects are the HIPASS Bright Galaxy Catalog (Koribalski et al. 2004), The Local Volume HI Survey (LVHIS; Koribalski et al. 2018), and WALLABY - the SKA Pathfinder HI Survey (Koribalski et al. 2020).
Prof Koribalski was also for many years the coordinator of ATNF's graduate student program and project leader for the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) 3mm receiver upgrade enabled through the Major National Research Funding (MNRF) program .
Prof Koribalski's scientific interests include:
- galaxy structure and kinematics
- galaxy formation and evolution
- tidal streams and bridges between galaxies
- giant radio galaxies
- galaxy groups and clusters
- odd radio circles (ORCs)
Prof Koribalski's current research focuses on the ASKAP survey science projects (esp. EMU & WALLABY) and deep observations of galaxy groups and clusters with MeerKAT.
She has published close to 300 refereed papers in highly cited international journals gaining over 11 000 citations. Her h-index is 64, with eleven key papers cited more than 200 times.
* Achievements *
In 2011 Prof Koribalski received CSIRO's Newton Turner Award.
She used the award to gather an international team of experts to create 3D visualisations of the neutral gas and stars in galaxies by combining the HI maps from her LVHIS project with multi-wavelength (optical, infra-red and ultra-violet) images from several space telescopes.
In 2012 Prof Koribalski was awarded a prestigious 5-year CSIRO Science Leader Fellowship and formed a strong team to advance galaxy studies with CSIRO's Australian SKA Pathfinder (ASKAP).
During her Science Leader Fellowship Prof Koribalski was awarded the 2015 CSIRO Chairman's Medal as a key member of the ASKAP team.
In 2019 she joined Western Sydney University as an Adjunct Professor.
Over the last ten years Prof Koribalski has been awarded ten 3-year OCE postdoctoral fellowship, enabling her to build and lead diverse and productive teams.
She has published close to 300 refereed papers in highly cited international journals gaining over 11 000 citations. Her h-index is 64, with eleven key papers cited more than 200 times.
