Biography

As a research immunologist, I develop critical knowledge that informs the development of novel and effective interventions against infectious disease. I obtained a Bachelor of Medical Research with first-class honours in immunology at the University of Tasmania in 2013. Following my undergraduate studies, I undertook a PhD and postdoctoral fellowship at the Menzies Institute for Medical Research in Hobart. I was motivated by an interest in Australia’s unique and varied biodiversity to apply my expertise beyond the typical boundaries of immunology for the benefit of animal health. My research studied immune function in Tasmanian devils, informing the development of vaccines against Tasmanian Devil Facial Tumour Disease (DFTD), an unusual contagious cancer. My work in this field inspired a keen awareness and passion for understanding animal disease threats, and how these feedback in a ‘One-Health’ cycle to influence our industries, economy, population and ecosystem.

In 2022, I joined the CSIRO Biotechnology Team in Hobart, in the program of Livestock & Aquaculture, as a Research Scientist. Through implementation of multidisciplinary laboratory and bioinformatic skills in immunology and precision genome engineering, I am interested in augmenting the profound protective properties of natural immune systems to prevent and treat disease in farmed animals. Through research in aquaculture species and collaboration with industry, my goal is to develop platform technologies and disease interventions that can be applied broadly to improve welfare and sustainability, and promote a holistic 'one-health' approach, within the aquaculture sector.
