Biography
Shane has held leadership roles within CSIRO's Health & Biosecurity (H&B) research unit since early 2020, including ~2 years as a/g Deputy Director. Working closely with the leadership team, Shane has enabled significant strategic and operational shifts. This includes reforming H&B's approach to strategic science investment, enabling research portfolio shifts under our research programs, and driving improvements for H&B's project portfolio by way of consistent and transparent systems and processes.
Prior to this, Shane was a Manager within CSIRO Futures, CSIRO's strategic advisory arm, leading teams to deliver advice to senior stakeholders across government and industry. This focused on the assessment of opportunities and challenges across the biotechnology & lifescience sectors, and advanced science (cyber, quantum) sectors. Shane has delivered work in collaboration with the Department of Industry, the Defence Science and Technology Group, and the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) under the Department of Health.
Shane has also held various research roles with a focus on applied biophysics, including leadership of research platforms in CSIRO, and post-doctoral research positions at the French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS) and at the University of Amsterdam. Shane was a founding member of the Pride@CSIRO 'werkgroup' and recipient of the 2018 CSIRO medal for D&I, and remains a member of the Pride@CSIRO network, which aims to increase inclusion and acceptance of the LGBTIQ+ community in CSIRO and the STEM sector more broadly.
