Biography

Danilo Urzedo is a human geographer and a Postdoctoral Fellow at CSIRO working on the Valuing Sustainability Future Science Platform. Danilo draws his research on political ecology and science and technology studies to investigate how the intersection of digital innovations and environmental justice influence knowledge production and governance systems. He is particularly interested in practice-oriented and decolonial research to question and co-design the multiple ways that digital technologies and data practices can assist in pluralising situated environmental planning and management, while critically examining the effects of these technological systems on existing socio-spatial inequalities across varying contexts.

Following several years working as a community forester with Indigenous groups and smallholders in the Brazilian Amazon, he undertook a PhD in Human Geography at the University of Sydney. His thesis focused on the governance of forest landscape restoration in the Amazon agricultural frontier. Subsenquently, he served as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Cambridge in the Department of Sociology, working on the social-political effects of digital technologies on forest environments. Currently, his research at CSIRO centres on co-designing environmental data justice practices with Indigenous communities and landholders in regional Queensland to pluralise the modes of valuing biodiversity and carbon farming activities.

As part of his participatory research processes, Danilo adopts a range of qualitative and digital methods. His research considers collaborative methodologies to co-design, deploy, and evaluate technological tools, such as data platforms and Large Language Models, to negotiate knowledge coproduction, environmental monitoring, and decision-making processes.
