Biography
Since beginning my research career I have applied molecular biology within a broad range of contexts, from bioprospecting and discovery of novel microorganisms in sub-Antarctic and Antarctic environments to investigating microbe-mineral interactions in geological formations, e.g. cave speleothems and desert varnish, and in 2005 I joined CSIRO as a Molecular Biologist investigating genetic controls for invasive fish species. For the past 10 years my research has been focussed in the marine environment, specifically, the use of metagenomics for the study of microbial ecology and it’s utility for ecological monitoring, particularly in our coastal systems, in relation to anthropogenic impacts and determining long-term trends in ocean health.
Global ecosystems are subject to anthropogenic pressures at an unprecedented scale, threatening provision of valuable ecosystem services that society relies upon and there is an urgent need for effective tools to monitor and predict their impacts. Nucleic acid-based observation of organisms from environmental samples (e.g., water, soil, sediment, air, hosts) is revolutionising biodiversity sciences and ecosystem biomonitoring efforts. My science is focussed on the goal of advancing the use of these novel observations within three focus areas:
Provisioning time series biodiversity observations from Australia’s coasts and oceans, towards determining long-term trends in coasts and ocean.
Biodiversity assessments, baseline characterisation and development of ecosystem monitoring strategies in relation to proposed marine industry operations for key CSIRO clients.
Development of workflows and standards to promote “trust” and interoperability of ‘omics data through engagement with national and international ‘omics communities.
Current Roles
-
Partner in the Omic Biodiversity Observation Network (BON) endorsed by the Group on Earth (GEO) BON (2022 - current)
Omic BON plans to leverage actions undertaken in the marine community seeking to advance ‘omics observations of biodiversity across all environments and geographies. -
Member of the IOC-UNESCO Ocean Best Practices System Task Team 21-03: Omics/eDNA Protocol Management (2021 - current)
Development of workflows and metadata standards to promote trust and interoperability of ’omics data. -
Coastal Sampling sub-Facility Co-Lead, Integrated Marine Observing System (2021 - current)
Provisioning time series DNA-based biodiversity observations from a network of Australian coastal sites for determining long-term trends in coasts and ocean health. -
Marine Microbiome Initiative Facility Lead, Integrated Marine Observing System (2019 - current)
Provisioning time series DNA-based biodiversity observations from the IMOS National Reference Station network for determining long-term trends in coasts and ocean health. -
Australian Microbiome Initiative Core Science Team (2019 - current)
Key responsibilities are for protocols and workflows and engagement with the international ‘omics community.
