Across a 20-year career, I have worked in managed and natural ecosystems in USA, Europe, and Australia. I began wading in urban streams and graduated to large rivers, paddled through northern lakes, peatlands, and tundras, sailed to southern subtropical mangroves, and now have planted myself in Australian agricultural systems.

I am passionate about maximizing the impact of innovation and research. Trained as a biogeochemist, I apply ecological and social concepts and principles to the design and management of food and agricultural systems.

My current research has two areas:

Addressing agriculture market access requirements, with an emphasis on enabling provenance verification across agrifood value chains. Marking use of the biogeochemical processes which constrain, quantifies, and links the mechanisms of carbon and nitrogen cycling at regional and national scales, I aim to develop objective verification systems. The goal is to create transparent and trusted solutions that empower consumers and producers with the knowledge and provide assurance that our actions accumulate to positive outcomes.

Developing and strengthening the contribution of science towards wide-scale and lasting impacts, by rethinking research institutions’ and scientists’ roles, research practices, and the communication of scientific knowledge within CSIRO’s research and innovation strategies. Taking a participatory research approach, I align the implementation of A&F impact-oriented portfolios.
