Biography
Dr Jonathan Yu is currently the Team Leader for the Environmental Information Infrastructures Team in the Environmental Informatics group in CSIRO.
Jonathan joined CSIRO in 2009 and worked on the WIRADA project developing tools for the Bureau of Meteorology's water information system. The tools enable the integration of data via a water data transfer standard and validation tools from water providers across the country making sure the data produced a national picture of water resources and enabling improvement of its management. It was during that time, that Jonathan grew an interest in addressing challenges in data integration, data delivery of modelling outputs and forecasts and information infrastructure to support environmental applications.
Since that time, Jonathan and his team has developed a number of tools and platforms for streamlining integrated information and data delivery through initiatives such as eReefs, AURIN, and National Bushfire Intelligence Capability (NBIC) (https://research.csiro.au/nbic). Jonathan has developed particular expertise in architecting data and information systems, data integration (i.e. Linked Data), and data analytics solutions. He and his team continue to research innovative approaches to enhance decision making and understanding through improved information access across the environmental domain.
Over the last several years, Jonathan has led the CSIRO team’s contribution to the Reef Restoration Adaptation Program (RRAP) for operationalization of modelling and decision support capabilities and knowledge delivery and data access through information systems. RRAP seeks to provide reef managers and decision-makers with viable intervention options through developing, piloting and scaling up new technologies for reef recovery and adaptation. Jonathan leads platform delivery in the operational knowledge and decision support efforts in RRAP enabling publication of critical model data outputs and the management, access and traceability of these critical datasets via a digital platform called Provena (provena.io). Provena is a cloud-based knowledge management system that enables users to register, manage, and publish knowledge artefacts used and generated within a scientific or modelling workflow. It includes a sophisticated provenance capability to capture individual simulation or model run records, their results, and associated data to enable traceability and repeatability.
Other activities include:
* Led and operationalised network.csiro.au - CSIRO internal capability discovery search engine, which integrates HR, research and project data
* Testing Generative Artificial Intelligence approaches and tools in environmental applications and domains as part of research interests seeking to accelerate digital delivery of data and knowledge.
* Collaborating on an international data standard via the OGC and partners (UCAR, UK Met Office) called netCDF-LD for integration across netCDF data (a commonly used data format for environmental data)
* Member of the Research Data Alliance Vocabularies Services Interest Group
