Biography
Zhaojun Han is currently a Principal Research Scientist at CSIRO Manufacturing. He received his B.Eng and PhD from School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE), Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, in 2004 and 2009, respectively. He joined CSIRO as an OCE Postdoctoral Fellow in 2009, became a Research Scientist in 2012, Senior Research Scientist in 2015, and Principal Research Scientist in 2023.
Dr Han’s research focuses on developing low-dimensional functional materials, including carbon nanotubes, graphene and metal oxide nanostructures, to tackle the challenges in materials, energy and environmental science. He is an expert in vertical graphene, a special form of graphene that grows perpendicularly to the substrate. Vertical graphene can prevent the “re-stacking” issue of graphene layers, thereby enabling fast ion transport and large surface accessibility in energy storage devices. Together with colleagues and collaborators, he demonstrated that vertical graphene can be integrated into batteries and supercapacitors to offer highly-effective and reliable charge storage for renewable energy, hybrid electric vehicles and many other applications. More recently, his research is extended to vertical graphene supported catalysts for hydrogen energy (a CAS-CSIRO Joint Project 2019-2022) and CO2 reduction.
Dr Han has published 7 patents and ~160 papers in peer-reviewed international journals including Chem. Soc. Rev., Energy & Environ. Sci., Nat. Comm., J. Am. Chem. Soc., Phys. Rev. Lett., Adv. Mater., Adv. Energy Mater., ACS Nano, etc. His total citation is ~8,200 and H-index is 51. He is the recipient of the ARC Future Fellowship (2022), 40 Under 40 Most Influential Asia Australians (2019), the ATSE Young Scientist Exchange Program (YSEP) Award (2017), the ATSE Priming Grant Award (2016), CSIRO’s Julius Career Award (2014), ARC’s Discovery Early Career Researcher Award (2013), the Prestigious Engineering Achievement Award from the Institution of Engineers Singapore (2007), and the SM3 Undergraduate Award from Ministry of Education Singapore (1999). He is also a participant of the inaugural AcceleratiON! Program (2015), a team member of the finalist of The Australian Innovation Challenge (2015) and a mentor of the NEXT innovative program (2016). Dr Han has co-supervised ~30 PhD students and 9 postdoctoral fellows. He has held visiting positions at University of Oxford (2016), Singapore University of Technology and Design (2015&2012), Zhejiang University (2015), and University of Toronto (2009). He also collaborated extensively with scientists from Australia, USA, UK, China, Singapore and Israel.
